NHS and private eye tests
An eye test (also called a sight test) checks how clearly you see and looks for signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts. Otley Eye Care offers NHS eye tests if you qualify and private eye tests if you don’t, for adults and children, at 26 Market Place, Otley LS21 3AQ. The NHS recommends most people have an eye test every 2 years.
An eye test is carried out by an optometrist registered with the General Optical Council (GOC). The NHS describes it as a check of your vision and the health of your eyes. It may also cover how well your eyes focus, work together, judge depth and see colour (NHS). A typical test follows these steps:
In England, an NHS eye test is free if the test is clinically necessary and you’re in an eligible group. You qualify if you’re:

The NHS recommends an eye test every 2 years for most people, and more often if your optometrist advises it (NHS). Common reasons to go sooner:
| Your situation | Usual guidance |
|---|---|
| Most adults with no symptoms | Every 2 years |
| You’ve noticed a change in your vision, or new headaches when reading | Book now. Don’t wait for your 2-year check |
| Diabetes, glaucoma, or a family history of glaucoma | As your optometrist advises, often more frequently |
| Children | As advised by the optometrist. See children’s eye tests |
| A sudden change: flashes, floaters, pain or loss of vision | Not a routine test. See urgent eye care |
No. To drive in the UK you must be able to read a number plate (made after 1 September 2001) from 20 metres, with glasses or contact lenses if you need them, and meet the minimum visual standards. An eye test tells you whether your vision, with the right prescription, is likely to meet that standard. If you’re unsure whether you can see well enough to drive, book an eye test before your next journey.
All our eye tests take place at our practice on Otley’s Market Place. These pages cover eye tests for particular people and places:
Yes, it’s still worth having one every 2 years. Some eye conditions, including glaucoma, usually cause no symptoms in the early stages and are found at routine eye tests (NHS).
