What a hearing test involves, and when to see a GP instead.
Signs it may be time for a hearing test
Hearing loss usually comes on gradually, so family and friends often notice it first. Common signs include:
- turning the TV or radio up louder than others like
- often asking people to repeat themselves
- struggling to follow conversations in busy places such as pubs, cafés or family gatherings
- finding it hard to hear on the phone
- ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
What happens in a hearing test?
According to the NHS, hearing tests for adults can include:

| Pure tone audiometry | The quietest sounds you can hear at different pitches, played through headphones |
| Speech audiometry | How well you can hear and repeat words |
| Tympanometry | How well your eardrum moves, which can show fluid or other problems in the middle ear |
A hearing test takes around 15 minutes to an hour depending on which tests you have, and the results are usually explained at the end (NHS: hearing tests, checked 28 September 2026).
When to see a GP or get urgent help instead
Sudden hearing loss is urgent. The NHS advises getting urgent medical help if your hearing suddenly gets worse or goes, especially with symptoms such as earache. Contact your GP straight away or call NHS 111. Don’t wait for a routine hearing test.
You can also see your GP if your hearing is gradually getting worse, or hasn’t recovered after treatment for an ear infection or earwax. Your GP can refer you to an NHS audiology service (NHS).
Before your hearing test
- Note when you first noticed a change, and the situations where hearing is hardest
- Bring a list of medicines you take
- If you already wear hearing aids, bring them
- You’re welcome to bring someone with you

Can I have a hearing test and an eye test on the same day?

Can I get NHS hearing aids?
NHS hearing aids are available through NHS audiology services, usually after a referral from your GP (NHS). If a hearing test with us suggests you might benefit, we’ll explain your options, including the NHS route.
Is there anything I can try before booking?
The NHS notes that free online hearing checks are available from organisations such as the charity RNID. They’re a useful first step, but they aren’t a full hearing test.
